The eighth report of the Prison Service Pay Review Body (PSPRB) was released today. It makes recommendations on the pay of Governing governors and other operational managers, prison officers and related support grades in public sector prisons in England and Wales in 2009.
The headline recommendations include:
- a 1.8% consolidated increase to the maximum of the Operational Support Grade, Prison Officer and Principal Officer pay scales and the Senior Officer single pay point;
- a 1.5% consolidated increase to the maximum of Manager and Senior Manager pay ranges and compression of pay ranges.
In aggregate what the recommendations mean is:
- Average earnings growth for those in post of 3.6%.
- The paybill will increase by £40.5 million.
All of which is to be funded by tax payers in the private sector, even as the private sector continues to contract and job losses mount.
There are just under 36,000 staff in the England and Wales Prison Service, making the pay hike average more than £1,125 per head.
